Rain soaks the newly installed field at Fort Mill High as their game against Chester was cancelled Friday night. Photo by John Turner

It’s not too often that football games get rained out, but that is exactly what happened Friday.

All three Fort Mill based high schools had their games canceled and/or postponed. Nation Ford did get part of their game in. Fort Mill and Catawba Ridge didn’t get their games started.

Catawba Ridge was at East Gaston High School in Mount Holly, N.C. for a non-region game looking to get their first win on the season. The Copperheads didn’t get to even take a snap as lighting in the area popped up and didn’t relent for roughly an hour and 45 minutes. Their game was eventually postponed at 9 p.m.

The Copperheads will travel back to East Gaston for an 11 a.m. kickoff on Saturday, Aug. 31.

Like Catawba Ridge, Fort Mill didn’t get to start their home game against Chester either. Fort Mill, who was 1-0 on the season, was looking to start their home schedule on their new turf at Bob Jones Stadium when the showers came. The game was cancelled at about 8:45 p.m. and won’t be made up between the two teams.

Nation Ford did get their game started, but will have to return to York at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31 to finish (see related story).
