Catawba Ridge’s Cole Stukitz tips a ball over the net during the Copperheads match at Indian Land High School.

INDIAN LAND – While not considered an upset, the Indian Land Warrior boys’ volleyball team made quick work of a surprised Catawba Ridge Copperheads.

Indian Land won 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-13) to sweep the season series.  Catawba Ridge dropped to 12-7 overall and 7-4 in Region 3-5A.  The first match between the two teams went five sets, which was expected this time around.

“We just didn’t play,” said Catawba Ridge head coach Ross Lisee. “After losing the first two sets, I think it shook them.”

Both teams started out equal trading points, but then Indian Land took a 12-7 lead scoring five consecutive points to gain the advantage before a Catawba Ridge timeout. Indian Land put together a 10-point run to go up 17-7 before the Copperheads scored again.

Catawba Ridge rallied to make it 19-15 after scoring eight of the next 10 points.

Indian Land seemed unphased by the rally as they again pulled away scoring the last six points of the set to go up 1-0.

The second set started much like the first with neither team being able to gain an advantage. Catawba Ridge would grab small two-point leads, but it wasn’t enough to hold the Warriors at bay.

It was the Warriors that started to get the advantage with five consecutive points to go up 20-15 before a Copperheads timeout.

After the timeout, Indian Land was able to maintain control and took the second set going up 2-0.

Indian Land kept the momentum starting the third set going up 9-1, before Catawba Ridge scored five consecutive points.

Despite the rally, Indian Land still kept control of the set and went up 16-9 as Catawba Ridge struggled to find places to put the ball.

Indian Land continued to widen their lead at 21-11 to put the Copperheads away in taking the third set.
