MOUNT PLEASANT – The Nation Ford Falcons girls’ volleyball team finished second at the Wando Invitational on Saturday.

Nation Ford went 6-1 in the tournament falling in the finals of the gold bracket and are now 36-3 overall on the season.

The Falcons lost 2-0 (25-22, 25-16) to Lucy Beckham in what could be a preview of the 5A Division II state championship match next month. Lucy Beckham is 22-1 on the season and is one of the stronger Lower State teams. Nation Ford is ranked No. 1 in 5A and Lucy Beckham is ranked No. 2.

Nation Ford opened the Wando tournament going 2-0 on Friday, Oct. 11 beating Bluffton 2-0 (25-12, 25-12) and Ashley Ridge 2-0 (25-13, 25-17).

On Saturday, the Falcons went 4-1 on the day and started off by beating St. Joseph’s 2-0 (25-17, 25-17) and Porter-Gaud 2-0 (25-11, 25-21). The first set of the tournament that Nation Ford dropped was to Wando as they had to go three sets to beat them 2-1 (25-20, 22-25, 15-13).

They also had to go three sets against Musselman out of West Virginia winning 2-1 (25-21, 23-25, 15-13) in the semi-finals of the gold bracket setting up the gold bracket finals against Lucy Beckham.

Nation Ford plays next at Fort Mill on Thursday, Oct. 17.

Catawba Ridge went 2-4 in the tournament and were missing two regular starters. They are now 13-12 on the season.

The Lady Copperheads next play at home against Rock Hill on Tuesday, Oct. 15.
