Catawba Ridge won their first 5A region title as the girls’ golf team won the region championship tournament Tuesday in Chester.

CHESTER – The Catawba Ridge Copperheads have their first 5A region title.

The Lady Copperheads golf team won the Region 3-5A golf championship winning the region tournament held at Chester Golf Club in the 18-hole tournament Tuesday.

“We set a goal at the beginning of the season and this was one of our goals,” said Catawba Ridge head coach Laura Covington.

Catawba Ridge won shooting a 324, beating Nation Ford by 16 strokes as the Falcons shot a 340. Fort Mill shot a 357 to finish third and Indian Land was fourth with a 360.

Reagan Lynch led the Copperheads with a 78 and won a playoff on the second hole over Nation Ford’s Piper Sabino, who also shot a 78 to lead the Falcons.

After Lynch’s score, Brooke Mehlhouse shot a 79 and Ella Rose Hill shot an 81. Anjali Peddisetty finished the scoring for Catawba Ridge with an 86. The top four scorers for the Copperheads made the All-Region team.

After Sabino, Nation Ford was led by Sara McCaskill, who shot an 84. Katie Griggs fired an 86 and Hadley Mark shot a 92.

Fort Mill was led by Sam Benton with an 80, who finished fourth overall. Claire Collins finished with an 87 and Ava Starosky shot a 94. Lauren Venino finished the scoring for the Jackets with a 96.

All three local schools qualified for the Upper State tournament, also held at Chester Golf Club, on Monday, Oct. 21.

The top eight finishers out of 14 teams at the Upper State tournament will advance to the 5A Division II state championship in Easley Oct. 28-29 at Smithfields Country Club.
