Catawba Ridge’s Alex Broughton pushes the ball over the net during the Copperheads match Wednesday against Weddington.

After dropping the opening set, the Catawba Ridge girls’ volleyball team rallied to pick up a win Wednesday night.

The Copperheads beat the Weddington Warriors 3-1 (24-26, 25-20, 25-23, 25-10) to improve to 4-4 on the season.

Weddington opened the match going up 6-2, but Catawba Ridge came back to tie it at six. The two teams would then start trading points back and forth with neither team getting more than a two-point lead.

The Warriors finally broke that streak going up 13–10. The Copperheads got right back into the set tying it at 14. Catawba Ridge would go up 19-16 as Weddington looked to regroup with a timeout.

The timeout didn’t work as the Warriors had planned as they took another one soon after with Catawba Ridge leading 21-18.

The Copperheads kept the lead out of timeout, but Weddington forced Catawba Ridge into mistakes and tied the set at 24 before the Copperheads called time to discuss things. The Warriors came out of the timeout to take the first set scoring the next two points.

“After losing the first set, we talked about how equally matched we are,” said Catawba Ridge head coach Alicia Lisee. “We tried to eliminate errors. We made sure to be aggressive and be mindful of where we were sending the ball.”

Weddington started strong again in the second set going up 4-2, but Catawba Ridge would come back to take a 10-5 lead.

The Copperheads kept things moving in their direction and went up 18–12 before the Warriors took a timeout. Catawba Ridge got stronger as the set went on and kept a comfortable six-point lead for the most part coming out with a 25-20 set win to tie the match at one.

The third set started with Catawba Ridge controlling the serve and going up 7-4. The Copperheads were strong in their returns preventing Weddington from getting many kills as they controlled the third set in the early portion going up 12-7.

Weddington didn’t make it easy as they would pull back to within two at 14-12. The Warriors would tie the third set at 16 forcing Catawba Ridge into a timeout. The set would stay close as the Copperheads kept Weddington on their heels holding a small two-point lead.

The lead was short lived as the Warriors again rallied to tie the set at 22. After another timeout, Catawba Ridge would come back and score the final three points of the set to take a 2-1 lead making sure they didn’t repeat the mistakes they made in the opening set.

Catawba Ridge kept the momentum heading into the fourth set and took a slim 7-5 lead in the early portion. The Copperheads stayed focus and was able to continue to push the pace taking a 16-8 lead over the Warriors before they called a timeout.

Catawba Ridge didn’t slow down out of the timeout and kept the pace up going up 22-10 before closing out the set and match scoring the final seven points in the set, the longest streak in the match.

The Copperheads will open their Region 3-5A schedule next Tuesday, Sept. 3 at Fort Mill.
