Catawba Ridge’s Lance Barnes fights between two Indian Land players during the Copperheads game Friday night in the Arena.

Another second half scoring tsunami helped the Catawba Ridge Copperheads boys’ basketball team overtake the Indian Land Warriors Friday night.

The Copperheads won 64-38 outscoring the Warriors 39-16 in the second half.

“The first half we were stagnant,” said Catawba Ridge head coach Brett Childers. “In the second half, with Quh (Webb), we were better. We are better when we play fast.”

The Copperheads, in front of a packed Arena, opened the game on a 9-0 run. Catawba Ridge used their speed and fast breaks to extend their lead as Indian Land was content to shoot long range jumpers.

In the second quarter, the offense for both teams slowed some. Indian Land was more patient with the ball and started hitting from beyond the 3-point line allowing them to climb back into the game. All 12 points in the quarter for Indian Land were 3-pointers.

The Copperheads weren’t as aggressive on offense and didn’t convert early on. Catawba Ridge was able to take advantage of turnovers by the Warriors, which weren’t many. The Copperheads had a slim 25-22 halftime lead despite being outscored 12-7 in the second quarter.

The Copperheads opened the second half scoring two quick buckets in transition. Those baskets were part of an 8-0 run to start the third quarter.

Indian Land’s shooting went cold in the quarter as the Copperheads slowed things down later in the quarter offensively, when they weren’t pushing the ball in transition. As the quarter went on, Catawba Ridge started to pull away mostly scoring on turnovers. The Copperheads outscored Indian Land 23-7 in the third quarter taking a 47-29 lead to the fourth.

Indian Land was not able to make up much ground in the fourth quarter as the Copperheads’ quickness was too much for them. The Warriors struggled to get good looks at the basket as both Lance Barnes and Zyan Hager took over for the Copperheads in the fourth quarter. Barnes led with 21 points in the game for Catawba Ridge and Hager added 16 points. Quh Webb finished with 13 points as well for the Copperheads.

Catawba Ridge improved to 17-2 overall and 4-0 in Region 3-4A.
