Fort Mill’s Ross Thompson tips the ball over the net during their match against Indian Land Thursday night.

The Fort Mill Yellow Jackets boys’ volleyball team fell in four sets to a tough Indian Land team in a Region 3-5A match up Thursday.

Fort Mill lost 3-1 (25-13, 25-22, 22-25, 25-17) and are now 4-9 overall on the season and 2-4 in the region.

Despite the loss, Fort Mill head coach Tamisha Martin said things look better for the Jackets than they did earlier in the season.

“It is getting better,” she said. “We are just inconsistent. We have been able to compete with every team. We just need to be more consistent.”

Martin said she feels the next two matches against Nation Ford and Catawba Ridge next week are key for them to make a push in the second half of the region season.

In the first set, Fort Mill scored the opening point, but then Indian Land rattled off seven consecutive points leading to a Jackets timeout.

Indian Land extended that lead to 11-1 before Fort Mill scored again. The Warriors controlled things forcing Fort Mill into mistakes and went up 19-4 before another Fort Mill timeout.

Fort Mill played better out of the timeout, but the deficit was too much for them to make up as they fell in the first set.

The Jackets started the second set better with a 5-1 lead. That lead was short lived as Indian Land came back to tie the set at seven. Fort Mill didn’t let the rally get to them as they pushed ahead 11-8 and was a bigger threat to the Warriors in the second set.

The Jackets small surge wasn’t enough to hold Indian Land at bay for long as they would tie the set on two occasions before grabbing the lead 16-13.

Despite Fort Mill rallying to tie the set, neither team seemed to be able to pull away. Tied at 22, Indian Land scored the final three points to take a 2-0 lead.

Fort Mill got another good start with the Jackets going up 7-3. However, like in the second set, the Warriors were able to rally and tie the set at 11. The Jackets fought back to regain the lead and was able to get the set win to avoid the shutout.

It was Indian Land that got off to the hot start in the fourth set going up 10-3 by making Fort Mill miss shots and hitting shots long.

After a Jackets timeout, the Warriors were able to continue to pull away going up 17-6 before another timeout.

The deficit didn’t deter Fort Mill as they came buzzing back to make it 18-12 scoring six of seven points before an Indian Land timeout. The Warriors were able to regroup and pull away to take the set and the match.
