HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. –  The Fort Mill cross country team hasn’t missed a step since last season proving so by winning their season opener at the WNC Cross-Country Carnival.

Both the boys’ and girls’ teams won the championship flight on Saturday, Aug. 24 at Jackson Park in Hendersonville, N.C. There were 27 different teams participating in the event.

The Fort Mill girls won with 76 points as Heathwood Hall was second with 151 points. The Lady Jackets had three female runners finish in the top 20.

In the girl’s race, Fort Mill was led by Alivia Cleveland, who finished second to Asheville’s Sofi Alexander. Alexander finished with a 18:39, with Cleveland coming in at 18:46. There were 218 girls participating in the championship flight.

Kaylee Rovenstine finished eighth overall for Fort Mill in 19:36 and Mia Zook was 17th in 19:59. Ella Demmerle was 24th in 20:11 and rounding out the scoring was Avery Moriarty in 35th in 20:41.

The split between the Fort Mill girls in the race from their first through fifth runner was less than two minutes with their team average being 19:50.

In the boy’s race, Fort Mill had four runners in the top 25 out of 245 male runners. Fort Mill scored 81 points besting Dorman, who finished second with 118 points.

Leading Fort Mill was Connor Demmerle, who finished 11th overall in 16:22, and Isaac Campbell, who was 12th with the same time. Finn Leckrone was 20th in 16:43 and Hudson Haley was 25th in 16:48. Zack Larner finished the scoring for the Jackets with a 32nd place finish in 17:03.

The Fort Mill boys split between their first and fifth runner was just 41 seconds with an average time of 16:39.

Up next for the Jackets is the Trojan Invitational at Northwestern High School next Saturday, Aug. 31.

Aug. 24 Roundup

The Catawba Ridge boys’ volleyball team went 3-3 Saturday at the Byrnes Invitational opening their season. The Copperheads beat JL Mann twice in two different matches winning 2-0 (25-16, 25-12) and 2-1. They split with host Byrnes losing 2-0 and winning 2-1. Catawba Ridge also lost to Riverside 2-1 (26-24, 16-25, 12-15) and Mauldin 2-1 (23-25, 25-20, 13-15).

The Fort Mill boys’ volleyball team went 2-3 on Saturday at the Byrnes Invitational to kick off their season. Fort Mill beat Travelers Rest 2-0 (28-26, 27-25) and the Greenville Hurricanes 2-1 (24-26, 25-17,15-12) in the tournament. They fell 2-0 to Hanahan (25-21, 25-21), May River (26-24, 25-18), and lost to Northwestern 2-1 (25-17, 14-25, 12-15).

Nation Ford also participated in the Byrnes Invitational and went 4-2 overall losing in the semifinals in the silver bracket.
